  • Geeta Iyengar’s Translation#

To the noblest of sages, Patanjali, who gave us yoga for serenity of mind, grammar for purity of speech and medicine for the perfection of the body, I salute.

I salute before Patanjali whose upper body has a human form, whose arms hold a conch, and disc and a sword, who is crowned by a thousand headed cobra. Oh incarnation of Adisesa my humble salutations to thee.

  • A more literal translation#

    yogena cittasya padena vācāṃ
With yoga [the impurities] of the citta, with grammar the speech
    malaṃ śarīrasya ca vaidyakena
And impurities of the body with medicine
    yo’pākarottaṃ pravaraṃ munīnāṃ
He who removed these, the greatest of sages
    patañjaliṃ prāñjalirānato’smi
To Patanjali with folded hands I bow

    ābāhu puruṣākāraṃ
From the arms up to the head he has human form
    śaṅkhacakrāsi dhāriṇam
He carries the conch (sankha), disc (cakra) and sword (asi)
    sahasra śirasaṃ śvetaṃ
A thousand white heads [of the Ādiśeṣa]
    praṇamāmi patañjalim
    I pray to Patanjali
